If it comes to two-way radios there are a few options. Getting one doesn’t do you any good if there is nobody to speak to at the other end. If you have someone you want to stay in contact with in an emergency, you should only have one for any one of you. If you especially don’t have anyone to keep in touch with, you can check the guidelines for disaster preparedness for your local town and/or county authorities. They’ll sometimes suggest a kind of radio for your area. Here is a glimpse of the more growing types. Have a look at Tower Communication Service.
Truck drivers and other motorists once used CB radios extensively to communicate on the highway. Mobile phones limited, but did not remove, the usage of such radios. CB radios are also commonly used in the world for technical and recreational communications. Emergency support can be rendered on CB channels 9 and 19 in an emergency. A hand holding CB gets a range of only 1-2 miles. A good mobile CB radio with a 4-foot antenna (installed in a vehicle) will get about 4-5 miles. This restriction of the spectrum is due to the FCC’s 4 Watt power cap on CB radios. Greater selection may be achieved by changing or updating the CB.
FRS / GMRS
The family radio or FRS frequencies are typically found in radios of the form ‘walkie talkie.’ Such radio stations are used widely for family events such as shooting, fishing, biking, hiking etc. GMRS frequencies are usually included on these radios. Legally, GMRS frequencies require a license, but only about.02 percent of people operating on these frequencies actually carry one. The range is limited to 1-2 antennas on those radios. The FRS and GMRS radios have a fixed antenna, so the range can not be extended.
Hobbyists and various organisations have long been using 10 meter radios (also known as amateur or ham radios). The biggest drawback to a 10-meter license is they need it. This is considerably offset by the power and range that they provide. I ‘d suggest you get one just to get the license, but in an emergency I doubt anyone will complain. The range of a radio with 10 meters depends on the radio power output and antenna configuration. The 10-meter Magnum 1012 hand can get about 10 miles on USB. A 10 meter mobile Galaxy DX94HP radio with a 4-foot antenna can get a range of 100 miles. There are also many 10 meter radios that can be adjusted to get the same range on CB frequencies, though this is not technically legal.
Even if you’ve got a good two-way radio, it’s not bad to just get some kind of radio to get information about it. Although you can not send a signal through them, these radios can receive information from hundreds of miles away from origin, probably directing you to the evacuation area or alert of dangerous areas and circumstance.
AM / FM
When you haven’t learned about AM / FM broadcasting, maybe you’d like to find something out. AM / FM, most often Am, radio is a regular feature of most American’s lives. These are found in nearly any car, joggers, alarm clocks etc. using portable radios. You’ve always experienced a radio check of the emergency communication network. It starts as an annoying clicking noise accompanied by a notification saying “This was an emergency transmission network check.” You’ll most likely hear important information about most FM stations in an emergency situation.
Wetter / Alert
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric (NOAA) maintains a country-wide array of transmitters that continuously relay environmental statistics, as well as warnings and emergency reports relevant to various conditions. To pick up such transmissions, a specific kind of radio is needed. A decent weather / alert radio with SAME technologies can be configured for your particular county such that you get updates if there is an emergency situation near by.
A radio scanner (also known as a police scanner or race scanner) can be a good alternative to getting information if you don’t have an AM / FM radio or a weather / alert radio available. We will pick up a broad variety of frequencies like the NOAA frequencies based on the features of the scanner. These can not transmit a signal like the AM / FM radios, and the weather / alert radios.
